So I ask: "What music do you like?" Him: "Oh, I listen to everything!" Me: "Like, what in particular?" Him: "Oh, back home I had four tapes. Metallica, Guns n Roses, the Band and Jurassic Park!"
Yeah, that hot band Jurassic Park. Apparently he got the tapes from some traveling Spaniard. (Really.)
Me: "That's an interesting mix. Do you like the Beatles?" Him: "Who?"
But he wants to learn "American music," and hence has asked for some. Well, I'm always up for potentially saving someone from falling into the rap trap. I don't have the time to make a whole individualized mix, so I said if he wanted whole shows, no problem. I burned some early 80s shows cuz that's high energy and, I think, more accessable to non-Deadheads (or those unlikely to be truly converted) than the earlier shows.
But I figured he might as well have Cornell, too, just so that, if he runs into any Deadheads, he'll be officially hip. When I tried to burn it, though, only St. Stephen would burn! So weird ....
How in the hey would that happen? Any techno-savvy folks here have a clue?
And if anyone has thoughts about what Dead shows would be good for, as it were, Intercultural Communication and American Culture 101, share away :-)

When I burned through Itunes in the past, I often got different levels on different tracks - even if they all came from the same, even leveled source. Anyone out there got a clue/answer about this?

With one of those shows as his introduction, he could trace its heritage back to Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Woody Guthrie, B B King, and Merle Haggard. The "American Book of the Dead" draws lots of these connections, if you have a copy to lend him.

Born in '52, heard Live Dead when it came out and didn't like it, but got on the bus with WD early in 1970. Everything after the hiatus is "late" Dead, in my mind.
The band is important to me primarily because of its role in the utopian vision of psychedelic transcendence, 1966-1973. In my heart of hearts I feel the hippies were right, and that the world has never recovered from Richard Nixon.
But then maybe I'm just another old fart clinging to a nostalgic view of his youth.

I'm more of a Mac guy, but work with both platforms... and know WinXP better than Vista... but I've always found Windows Media Player to be a bugger. I think it has problems managing a variety of file types, i.e. .mp3 and .mv4 etc. If you have another program for burning CD's, like Nero, try that instead of the Windows product.
and congrats on a very interesting venture, you must be a really hardy soul.

I once burned the Eyes->Big River, Playin', The Race Is On and the China Cat->Rider from Des Moines 6-16-74 for a guitar player in Ghana. He went nuts. He played that disc 4 times that day and night and invited some friends over. He "had no idea about this kind of music".

For what it's worth, if someone had handed me Cornell as my first introduction to the dead I would have hated it. Now I think that concert is quite good, but it never would have grabbed me without any context.
I would suggest a selection from DP8. Here's my ideal track listing for a single CD:
1. St. Stephen >
2. Cryptical >
3. Drums >
4. Other One >
5. Cryptical >
6. Cosmic Charlie
7. Good Lovin'
8. Dancing in the Street
I think Garcia's guitar playing on Other One, Good Lovin and Dancing is the best, most fluid playing he's ever done (by "best" i mean better than EVERYTHING else, ever ever ever). But use your own instincts.

I like your "intro list," and that's the thing that would do it for me (and basically did, given what I first heard), but he has literally never heard any 60s psychedelia (never heard the Beatles, even) and isn't a musician, so it just might not be accessible. I'd listened to a lot of things in that general vein first (albeit, of course, not as good!) and I'm betting you did too. But what's interesting is there's just no contextual baseline here. Which is why I'm thinking high energy, with lots of cowboy Dead and stuff that rocks. But who knows ...

But yes, '72 is a good idea. Tight, with both cowboy tunes and Dark Stars, etc. Guess there's a reason Europe '72 was one of the first albums I listened to constantly. (Back when I first heard the music, I loved the first album, Anthem, Aoxomoxoa and Europe '72. Honestly, I don't think the others would have "converted" me. But I also saw a series of shows almost immediately, so it's hard to know what it would mean just to have heard the recorded music.)

I'll see if he still has it and tell you what he included. It would make a good curriculum for a new arrival from another planet who needed a few points of reference for all the sounds suddenly surrounding him. It must simply sound cacophonous at first.
I once tutored a deaf woman who heard the birds sing for the first time after she got a cochlear implant at age 45. Wonder if I could still turn her on to the Dead ... I'd be afraid it would make her brain explode.

There was actually a group of deaf Deadheads ... Deaf Heads? They'd go to shows and, I guess, enjoy the beat and the dancing.

After scrolling and skimming the posts I have to admit my immense dismay at no one recommending bluegrass. I might have just missed it.
That said anything by:
Bill Monroe
Stanley Brothers
Gibson Brothers
Del McCoury
Doc Watson
Ricky Skaggs
Newer:
Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper
Steep Canyon Rangers
Cadillac Sky
Farewell Drifters
Mountain Heart
And just so you can implode his head, have him try out Iron Horse - Fade To Bluegrass

I had the great fortune to see Crooked Still 3 times at FloydFest two years ago and if you'll indulge me, there's a pretty cool story.......
FloydFest has a workshop series each year - Tony Trischka, Michael Daves, Railroad Earth, Gokh Bi (drum troop). Anyway, in 2008, David Grisman was scheduled to do a mandolin workshop starting at 10:00 AM Saturday morning. I was in my seat in the fourth row at 9:30. 10:00 AM rolls up and there are about 3000 people crowded around the stage. One of the Floydian announcers came out and announced that there was a schedule change - the Grisman workshop was going to move to 11:00 AM and he asked that we stick around for Crooked Still. The vast majority stayed and the crowd was estimated at about 2700 - Aoife O'Donovan sticks her head out and went goggle-eyed at the size of the crowd. Crooked Still came out and blew the place away. About halfway through their set, Grisman pokes his head out and one by one all of the Quintet came to side stage to watch. It looked like he was really impressed and he really talked them up when the Grisman Quintet came out and did their workshop. It ended up being a Quintet set more than a mandolin workshop but none of us were disappointed. He did a Q&A period - someone asked him to tell some stories about what it was like playing with jerry in old and In the Way. Grisman looks out in the crowd and says "Well there's a lot of kids here........one time we drove up to Sausilito and played a gig. We met some really nice folks and after the show we went to their house. We, ummm, had a good time, and then we drove back to San Francisco." The crowd roared.
Anyway, back to Crooked Still. They played two more sets at Floyd and had a big crowd at each one. I ran into Tristan (cello), Brittany Haas (fiddle) and Aoife during New Monsoon's Saturday night set and had a short conversation about how much I enjoyed their impromptu set before Grisman. Aoife told me that Grisman asked them afterwards if they would consider joining his tour and open for him the rest of the summer. Apparently he was impressed too! I haven't seen them since then, but really enjoyed what I saw and won't miss them if they ever get close to Virginia Beach.
